This is a tragic and rapidly developing emergency, in a region already impacted by war, hosting a high number of displaced families. Our team has already rapidly deployed aid — warm blankets, sleeping bags, generators and tents — from our Tulcea Humanitarian Logistics Hub [see photos below], and is ramping up our efforts to raise emergency response funds.
The Weatherman Foundation has been working in Ukraine since early 2022, but many of our team members are deeply familiar with Turkey, Syria and the impacted region. As always, we are working tirelessly to help those in war-affected areas, and assessing support opportunities as the situation develops.
The 7.8 magnitude quake struck in the early hours of Monday while people were asleep. Within 12 hours of the first earthquake, a second large earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 caused further devastation. A blizzard over the weekend has left thousands exposed to extreme cold and without shelter. Hundreds of people remain trapped under rubble. With buildings severely damaged and destroyed, many people don't know where they will sleep tonight as temperatures plummet below freezing. It's a race against the clock to provide lifesaving emergency support.
This is a desperate situation.
Especially for millions of Syrian refugees who live close to the epicenter. Turkey is the world's largest host of refugees, home to more than 3.6 million Syrian refugees who have fled their country during the last 12 years of war.
